Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the \u201cLong term lease of <\/span><\/span>Khothakpa<\/span><\/span> Gypsum Mine and the <\/span><\/span>Chunaikhola<\/span><\/span> Dolomite Mine\u201d was signed on April 18, 2022 by the Secretary of the <\/span><\/span>Ministry of Economic Affairs, Mr. Karma <\/span><\/span>Tshering<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Dasho<\/span><\/span> Karma <\/span><\/span>Yezer<\/span><\/span> Raydi<\/span><\/span>, Chief Executive Officer, <\/span><\/span>Druk<\/span><\/span> Holding and Investments Limited. Officials from the Department of Geology and Mines attended the signing ceremony.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The MoU concerns the lease of <\/span><\/span>Kho<\/span><\/span>thakpa<\/span><\/span> Gypsum Mine located at <\/span><\/span>Khothakpa<\/span><\/span> under <\/span><\/span>Shumar<\/span><\/span> Gewog, <\/span><\/span>Pemagatshel<\/span><\/span> Dzongkhag, and the <\/span><\/span>Chunaikhola<\/span><\/span> Dolomite Mine located at <\/span><\/span>Nyoenpaling<\/span><\/span> under <\/span><\/span>Phuntshopelri<\/span><\/span> Gewog, <\/span><\/span>Samtse<\/span><\/span> Dzongkhag which are currently being operated on an interim lease by the State Mini<\/span><\/span>ng Corporation Limited (SMCL). The Mining Lease Agreement will be signed between the Department of Geology and Mines and the SMCL leasing these mines for 15 years lease period. During the lease period, the SMCL shall pay License Fees of Nu. 3 billion (Nu. <\/span><\/span>200 million per annum) for <\/span><\/span>Chunaikhola<\/span><\/span> Dolomite Mine and Nu. 1.125 billion (Nu. 75.00 million per annum) for <\/span><\/span>Khothakpa<\/span><\/span> Gypsum Mine to the Royal Government.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The MoU is expected to promote socially responsible and environment friendly sustainable mining whil<\/span><\/span>e contributing huge revenue to the State. Further, the MoU has the provision for other areas of cooperation for future development of the minerals and the sector with clear roles and responsibilities of the parties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The decision to lease these mines to SMC<\/span><\/span>L is based on Section 10 of the Mines and Minerals Management Act of Bhutan 1995 and Sections 27(1) and 28 of the Mines and Minerals Management Regulation<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> 2<\/span><\/span><\/a>022.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
