Synchronization of Unit-1 of Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project into Grid<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

December 17, 2024 – On the joyous occasion of Bhutan\u2019s National Day, the Royal Government of Bhutan announced the synchronization of Unit-1 And Unit (170 MW) of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu\u2013II HEP with the national grid. Marking the event, a ceremony was held at the project site attended by Hon\u2019ble Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Minister of Energy & Natural Resources; senior officials from the Ministry and Dzongkhag and the project management officials along with contractors.<\/p>\n

Bhutan and India enjoy long standing cooperation in the hydropower sector. Till date, both governments have partnered in the development of four major hydro-electric projects (HEPs) in Bhutan totaling 2,136 MW, including 336 MW Chhukha HEP, 60 MW Kurichhu HEP, 1020 MW Tala HEP and 720 MW Mangdechhu HEP.<\/p>\n

Taking forward this mutually beneficial cooperation, both sides are working towards the commissioning of all six units of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II HEP next year. Synchronization of Unit-1 (170 MW) enables transmission of electricity generated by this unit to India, and marks an important milestone in the development of the project. Once completed, the project will increase Bhutan\u2019s installed power generation capacity to 3,465 MW and contribute in a significant way towards Bhutan\u2019s economic growth and development.<\/p>\n
