{"id":9931,"date":"2020-10-21T17:46:31","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T11:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.moea.gov.bt\/?p=9931"},"modified":"2020-10-21T17:46:45","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T11:16:45","slug":"dgm-attends-igfs-first-ever-virtual-annual-general-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moenr.gov.bt\/?p=9931","title":{"rendered":"DGM attends IGF\u2019s first ever virtual Annual General Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The officials of Mineral Development Division and Mining Division from the Department of Geology and Mines, MoEA attended the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Annual General Meeting of Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development\u2019s (IGF). The IGF is a voluntary initiative supporting more than 76 nations devoted to optimizing the benefits of mining to achieve poverty reduction, inclusive growth, social development and environmental stewardship. Bhutan joined as a 70<sup>th<\/sup> member of IGF in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The impacts of COVID-19 on the mining industry are a major focus of this year\u2019s Annual General Meeting of the IGF. The 16<sup>th<\/sup> AGM opened on 20<sup>th<\/sup> October, 2020 and is the first of its kind to take place in a virtual format, due to travel restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 crisis. It will be a three day programme closing on 22<sup>th<\/sup> October, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual event will be attended by the representatives from government, industry, and civil society organizations in two parallel sessions viz. Stage A and Stage B. On the first day, the virtual meeting covered topics on <em>\u201cThe Future of Mining Employment and Skills; Building Resilient Communities; Global Standards for Environmental and Tailings Management, and Global Mine Closure Needs: Government and industry responses.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On subsequent days, the IGF will host sessions on <em>\u201cCOVID-19&#8217;s impact on\u00a0ASM,\u00a0Responsible Sourcing, and\u00a0Climate Change Action; and The\u00a0Future of Resource Taxation<\/em>.\u201d In addition, topics such as \u201c<em>Community Engagement and Environmental, and Social Impact Assessment<\/em>\u201d are also scheduled for discussion.
