Bhutan Explores the Potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) Knowledge Dissemination Workshop Held in Thimphu

The Department of Energy (DoE), Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Program, and with technical support from KPMG, successfully organized a one-day Knowledge Dissemination Workshop on Exploring the Potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Bhutan on June 25, 2025, in Thimphu.

The workshop was convened following special directives from the Prime Minister’s Office to explore alternative clean energy solutions for the aviation sector and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. The SAF study forms part of Bhutan’s broader strategic efforts to strengthen energy security and align with its commitment to remaining carbon neutral.

The event brought together key government agencies, technical experts, and relevant stakeholders to discuss the feasibility of SAF development in Bhutan. Topics included global developments in SAF, enabling policies and regulations, Bhutan’s domestic demand outlook, technology pathways, feedstock availability, infrastructure considerations, and environmental and social impacts.

Participants engaged in open discussions throughout the workshop, emphasizing a collective interest in advancing clean fuels and low-carbon development strategies. The workshop also explored alternate green fuel options such as compressed bio-gas from municipal solid waste as a complementary avenue for future investment.

This initiative reinforces Bhutan’s commitment to building a diversified and sustainable energy future, while contributing to regional clean energy cooperation under the SASEC framework.
