Punatsangchhu-II HEP Hands Over Nu. 820 Million in Revenue to Ministry of Finance

In a significant development underscoring the success of Bhutan’s hydropower sector, the Chairman of the Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project (HEP) today formally handed over Nu. 820 million to the Hon’ble Minister of Finance, earnings from the project through the sale of energy domestically since the commissioning of its first two units on 17th December 2024.

The handover ceremony was graced by the presence of Minister of Ministry of Finance, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and other senior officials from the ministries.

This achievement highlights the increasing contribution of the Punatsangchhu-II HEP to Bhutan’s economy and its role in generating clean and renewable energy. With four out of six units now operational, the project continues to make steady progress toward full commissioning by July 2025, if installation and testing of the last two units go as per the plan.

The event also reflects the time tested and mutually beneficial cooperation between Bhutan and India, who have long partnered in the development of hydropower potential. The successful progress of the Punatsangchhu-II HEP is a testament to this enduring friendship and shared vision for regional prosperity through clean energy collaboration.

The Hon’ble Minister of Finance expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Project Management and all stakeholders for their dedication and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that revenues from such strategic national assets are used for the benefit of all Bhutanese people.
