Bhutan-India Joint Steering Committee Strengthens Energy Cooperation

HE Mr. Pankaj Agarwal, Hon’ble Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India (GoI) made a courtesy call on to Hon’ble Lyonpo, HE Mr. Gem Tshering of the Ministry of Energy & Natural Resources (MoENR) on 5th June 2026. Hon’ble Secretary is on a three-day visit to the country to partake in the 1st Joint Steering Committee (JSC) meeting established between the two countries to take the bilateral energy cooperation forward. The two sides discussed on the areas of mutual concern including issues related to the ongoing projects of Puna-I&II and the cross-border energy trade inter alia. The GoI side agreed to render its due supports to RGoB in resolving the prevailing issues faced by the projects under construction on priority.
In the morning, RGOB delegation led by Secretary, MoENR met with the GoI’s delegation to review the progress on hydropower cooperation and took stock of the prevailing issues. GoI side expressed its satisfaction and assured of full supports in taking the exemplary cooperation forward.
In addition, a meeting was also held on the Sankosh hydropower project where the concerned GMCA and GIDC members along with DHI and DGPC also participated. Here, GoI side also expressed its full support to GMCA in taking the project forward in a timebound manner based on the principles so discussed. The meetings, as customary, were held in the most cordial atmospheres.
