Dasho Yeshi Wangdi, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs completed his tenure on October 3, 2019 after serving 35 years 6 months of dedicated service to the Tsa-Wa-Sum. Hon’ble Tengye Lyonpo presented life time service award to Dasho on behalf of His Majesty The King.
Dasho Yeshi Wangdi started his career as an Assistant Engineer in the Ministry of Economic Affairs (erstwhile the Ministry of Trade and Industry) after which Dasho was transferred to Chhukha Hydropower Corporation where he served in various capacities. Dasho was appointed as the Managing Director for Chhukha Hydropower Corporation in 2000 where Dasho looked after Bhutan’s first mega hydropower plant – the 336MW Chhukha that showcases the flagship of successful Bhutan-India friendship and cooperation between the two countries particularly in the power sector. He then served as the Director General of the Department of Energy and the Department of Hydropower and Power Systems, Ministry of Economic Affairs from 2007 to 2011 and 2011 to 2015 respectively.
Dasho shouldered a significant responsibility in restructuring Bhutan’s power sector such as bringing the hydropower generation sector under one umbrella through the creation of Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) in 2008 and also serving as the Member Secretary to the Empowered Joint Group (EJG) that was constituted to fast-track the development of hydropower projects under the “10,000 MW by 2020” understanding between the two countries of Bhutan and India in 2008.
For his unprecedented and selfless service to the Royal Government of Bhutan, Dasho was awarded Red Scarf by His Majesty on 17th December 2012 and was subsequently appointed as the Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs on 22nd May 2015.
Dasho is not only a civil servant of extreme caliber but was also an exceptionally brilliant student. He topped ICSE 1975 and ISC 1978 examinations. Dasho has an Engineering degree (Electrical) from the renowned Indian Institute of Technology in Karagpur, India and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri, USA where he proved himself to be a student of distinction.
