Status of Hydropower Plants as of 8:00 AM

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR) would like to update the general public on the operation of hydropower plants and the grid status due to the incessant rainfall and flash floods experienced across the country on 4-5 October 2025:

The status of hydropower plants as of 8:00 AM is summarized as follows:

  1. Tala Hydropower Project: Remains under shutdown; expected to resume operation by this evening. Dam overtopping continues, though at a decreasing rate. A drone inspection is being conducted this morning to determine the next course of action.
  2. Mangdechhu Hydropower Project: In operation under close monitoring.
  3. Nikachhu Hydropower Project: In operation under close monitoring.
  4. Basohhu Hydropower Project: In operation under close monitoring.
  5. Suchhu Hydropower Project: Under shutdown due to a transmission line fault at Dorokha area, which is being addressed.
  6. Dagachhu Hydropower Project: Under shutdown as a precautionary measure; currently under inspection and expected to be operational shortly.
  7. Kurichhu Hydropower Project: In operation under close monitoring.
  8. Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project: Under shutdown due to high sedimentation; silt flushing has been completed, and the plant is scheduled to resume operation by this evening.
  9. Chhukha Hydropower Project: Restored and in operation.

With clear weather reported across all project areas, river inflows are showing a decreasing trend. 

The Ministry, in closely coordinating with Druk Green Power Corporation Limited, Bhutan Power Corporation Limited, Hydropower plants, NCHM and Bhutan Power System Operator, continues to monitor and manage the evolving situation.
